Job Description

The Operational Risk Manager is responsible for supporting the successful execution of Butterfield’s Operational Risk Management programmes.

About the Team

Operational Risk works across the Group using risk assessments to identify and measure the risks the Bank incurs in the delivery of its products and services and the effectiveness of the controls we use to manage those risks. The team reports on the identified risks and remedial actions. The team is also responsible for Butterfield’s business continuity planning and ensures that the business is up and running as quickly as possible after an event.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Developing and maintaining a robust business continuity framework, as well as strategies, that align with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.

• Collaborating with key stakeholders to identify critical business processes to complete Business Impact Assessments, and establish recovery time objectives (RTOs) and recovery point objectives (RPOs).

• Maintaining crisis management protocols, incident response procedures, and conducting training and creation of employee awareness regarding business continuity processes.

• Supporting the enhancement and maintenance of the Group’s Business Continuity Management programme, working collaboratively with other jurisdictions and providing support where needed.

• Designing and coordinating global business continuity validation, including regular testing of business continuity plans to evaluate effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.

• Supporting the deployment of a comprehensive Risk and Control Self-Assessments (RCSA) programme, including methodologies, guidelines, and reporting frameworks.

• Facilitating quarterly jurisdictional RCSA assessments, working closely with process owners and subject matter experts to evaluate the effectiveness of established risks and controls.

• Analysing assessment results, control weaknesses, vulnerabilities, and gaps, providing recommendations for control enhancements and risk mitigation where required.

• Providing regular jurisdictional reporting of BCM, RCSA, the Bank’s risk and internal control profile, Key Risk Indicators, and periodic performance against declared risk appetites.

• Leading incident management and root cause analysis efforts for assigned areas to identify the underlying causes of operational incidents, and supporting the business to develop preventive measures.

• Undertaking ad hoc projects, local initiatives, and programmes at the request of Senior Management, to strengthen the overall operational risk framework and align jurisdictional efforts.

• Assisting with Third Party Risk Management processes to include outsourcing and vendor management activities.

• Serving as the Local Information Officer ensuring the effective deployment of the data privacy program, assessing and reporting on data breaches, and liaising with the Local Ombudsman when applicable.

Your qualifications and skills include:

• Post-secondary degree in business or risk management related field; professional qualification in risk management or Business Continuity Management preferred.

• Minimum of six years’ relevant experience in an Operational Risk or Business Continuity Management environment, preference in a similar industry or regulated environment.

• Sound understanding of internal control frameworks, including design and evaluation of controls.

• Strong communication skills (both oral and written) and negotiation skills.

• Ability to motivate teams and work to tight deadlines.

• Ability to multi-task, handle competing priorities, and follow through on commitments.
